Dropouts & Gear / Mech Hangers

A mech hanger (also known as a derailleur hanger) is a specific piece of the dropout. They are closely related but serve different purposes.
The Dropout: These are the two slots or holes at the very back of the frame where the rear wheel axle slots in.
The Mech Hanger: This is a small metal tab that attaches directly to the right-hand dropout. Your rear derailleur bolts into this hanger.
