On 2 June 2023, I was day two into my Land’s End to John o’ Groats endeavour and this was the first day I met a familiar face from the world of Instagram, Aidan King (@kingaidancyclist), who took time out of his day for work to meet me in Dulverton, Somerset. It was so nice to meet somebody I’d never met before, but had got to know through social media. What makes the Dorset Gravel Dash so good?

The Dorset Gravel Dash can count itself as one of the first – if not the very first – gravel ride weekenders to take place in the UK. Kicked off by Charlie Hobbs and his trusty adventure-loving friends over ten years ago, they handpicked a route over assorted terrain through the beautiful hills and coastal byways of Dorset, England and invited likeminded folks to join them.

A Serendipitous Cycle Ride

When the M25 was announced to be closed for the entire weekend, my initial plan to drive from Horsham to Staines-upon-Thames for a weekend getaway seemed doomed. Determined not to let the closure ruin my plans, I decided to turn this into an opportunity for an adventure on my Kinesis ATR.

The Kinesis UK Dorset Gravel Dash offered two different events on the same route on an action-packed and delightful weekend on 25/26 May 2024. Riders could choose the one-day 100-mile challenge, or the more leisurely two-day trip complete with overnight camping. Hazard a guess at which route we opted for.

TCR09 – A Rider Perspective

The Transcontinental is a single stage race in which the clock never stops. Riders plan, research and navigate their own course and choose when and where to rest. Each year TCR riders cover around 4,000km to reach the finish line – it's an incredible adventure.

In this story I managed to help a friend to move house and ride back home, do a local re-invented Audax, support and ride a charity ride, and tick of this month’s RrTY #5 with a TT thrown in at the beginning for good measure.
