Andy McAteer

Andy started riding a bike properly after a football injury, with the physios telling him to either take up swimming or cycling. Then, after finishing University and working in a bike shop in 2008, the love of the sport and the freedom that it gives grew into an obsession with him riding all sorts of different bikes every day.

Cycling for fitness

Cycling started off as a way of getting fit again after a dislocated hip put an end to playing football. Initially, it was mountain biking that Andy got into, often disappearing at weekends to Wales or Scotland from his base in the North-West of England. But after the Olympics in 2012 and the growth of road cycling, he turned to more tarmac-based riding and even dabbling in a little bit of track cycling. Not one for 'pinning a number on' his biggest achievements, however, are rides such as doing Manchester to London in a day, but most recently getting a gravel bike and disappearing off over the Moors local to his home. Running the Merlin Cycles Rivington Brewing Co Racing Team may ignite a competitive fire under Andy, and he might finally pin on that race number!
